Rachel A. Gordon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and the Institute of Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Professor Gordon has multidisciplinary substantive and statistical training and a passion for understanding and teaching applied statistics.

Review of "Applied Statistics For The Social & Health Sciences"

The book appears to be extremely thorough, with chapters covering everything from the most basic concepts of statistics through some of the more advanced techniques. It also includes several appendices including one useful one of screen shots for SAS and Stata programs with commands and expected outputs. The parts I read so far were frequently opaquely and unclearly written, with concepts often explained in terms of other concepts rather than illustrated with specific examples. I was forced onto the internet time and again to gain a detailed grasp of many of the concepts I could not understand from the textbook alone. Statistics is necessarily abstruse, with a lot of abstract concepts and even abstractions within abstractions. For this reason, it seems to me very important that the teaching of it should work to make the abstract ideas as clear as possible and as concrete as possible, something. So far, I have not found enough of that in this textbook.

This book is very unhelpful. The Display section in the back is ok but the rest of the book does not explain the concepts enough to do the homework within the book itself. The homework is only doable through google searching for definitions and how to do stata programming. If you have a course that will be using this book, I would be wary.

it gets the job done...not too shabby...lots of instructions and charts and graphs and the appendix is nice too ...not bad for a stats book
