Yet the renewal of popular anti-imperial energies across the globe provides an important opportunity to reassert the political and theoretical value of the postcolonial as a comparative, interdisciplinary, and oppositional paradigm. This collection makes a claim for what postcolonial theory can say through the work of scholars articulating what it still cannot or will not say. It explores ideas that a more aesthetically sophisticated postcolonial theory might be able to address, focusing on questions of visibility, performance, and literariness. Contributors highlight some of the shortcomings of current postcolonial theory in relation to contemporary political developments such as Zimbabwean land reform, postcommunism, and the economic rise of Asia. Finally, they address the disciplinary, geographical, and methodological exclusions from postcolonial studies through a detailed focus on new disciplinary directions (management studies, international relations, disaster studies), overlooked locations and perspectives (Palestine, Weimar Germany, the commons), and the necessity of materialist analysis for understanding both the contemporary world and world literary systems.

a book chockful of Latino dudes

Sorry for repeating this anecdote, but it still gets under my skin, so I gotta repeat it. I once wrote a paper and I used the phrase "Latino male" in it and the Cubana who read the paper rolled her eyes and said that's the most redundant term in the world. I have always argued that it is not. English is less gender-conscious than Spanish. If I say, "A Latino just walked down the street" in English, it could be either gender, so to be more specific, I would say "Latino male." I'm not Latino, but I will argue until my tongue falls off that there is nothing wrong with using the phrases "Latino male" or "LatinO woman" in English. I understand for Romance languages that might be another story.

Anyway, this is a well-done anthology. It is diverse in terms of issue: mental health, education, employment, crime, etc. It also doesn't treat the subject "Latino male" as a monolithic group. In toto, the anthology acknowledges youth, rainbow-flag men, the undocumented, etc. Plus, it stays on point. There's a book edited by H. Hidalgo about lesbians of color where only a few of the article were about that target group. Here, most chapters are all about Latino males; it doesn't just mention them once and then start speaking of both genders, or saying their name once and then just speaking about males of color generally, and stuff.

Still, I had problems with individual chapters. The chapter "Street Socialization and Psychosocial Moratorium" was just a bunch of psych. department babble. Talk about useless. The chapter "Latino Male Violence in the United States" said little besides, "Few statistics have been compiled on the matter." The chapter "Adolescent Mexican American Males: No Increased Risk" said that group does not have more mental problems than other groups. Okay, but then write about it? Is the point to silence others who raise the issue? Should you be proud when you prove that a concern is moot about an oppressed population? The chapter on employment was all statistical yack-yack and would bore non-numbers crunchers.

Dr. Michael Messner once said the majority of students who take his men's studies courses are women. If you look carefully at the authors here, approximately half are female. This book doesn't bash women or specifically feminists in the slightest.

At times, the anthology feels uneven. However, I definitely recommend this work to many readers. I am pleased that it was published.

I have a copy signed by Dr. Noguera, and cannot part with it, although I plan to lend it to a close Chicana friend studying Bilingual Education but I cannot let go of this book.

This book clarifies deeply the horror we yet confront in late-anglo America.

Where are our young men?

What does this highly discriminatory present hold?

At what juncture do we find ourselves?

Concentration camps and death only?

No jobs, no education, no chance, out of luck, can't raise the family, no credit, no future, no language, culture criminalized by the anglo rulers, even mere presence illegalized? Breathing a crime without papers?

Read this book.

To find the way out we must look closely at where we are, under the strong light of these brilliant scholars, educators and social scientists. We must be invisible no more.

To know where we have come from we might read such works as Zoot Suit and Other Plays, and so very much more, but to get a grip of where we are going we must study hard this present volume of excellent research essays, and chart our course by its brilliant light.

Doctor Pedro Noguera is a noted Professor of Education at New York University, and remarkable speaker. If a professional conference ever brings him to your town, do all that you can to get there, and hear the truth spoken loudly and boldly, and act.

Professor Aida Hurtado teaches in the Chicana and Chicano Department at the University of California in Santa Barbara.

The introductory essay, "Invisible No More: The Status and Experience of Latino Males from Multidisciplinary Perspectives" clearly defines the difficulties encountered by young men today, providing primary sources for their statements. The remainder of this collection divides into four parts, The First Part describing the State of Latino Males. This opening part contains essays on Social Mobility, Mental Health Problems (No Increased Risk), Health Disparities (Exploring Solutions), and the impact of Day Labor and life on the Margins, authored by various experts in the fields of health, psychology, sociology, etc.

The Second Part discusses the Construction of Masculinity, starting with a study of Young Latino Men's Educational Achievement. Also considered in this section are Gender and Legal Status in Latino Media, Machismo and Latino Male Identity, the transformation through Latino and Latina Children's Literature, how undocumented Latino youth may access higher education, and the phenomenon of Gay Latino Immigrant acts in San Francisco.

Part three explores how Race, Gender and Skin Color construct identification, with essays asking how race and national origin impact the hourly wages of Latino men, the construction of ethnic identification by race among Mexican and Puerto Rican boys, how race stigmatizes masculinity and empowerment in schooling, and the formation of close friendships among Latino teens "Sometimes you need to spill your heart out to someone."

Part four examines the environmental factors and violence, with an essay on street socialization and psychosocial moratorium, and an article on Latino Male violence in the USA. The closing essay draws the three editors together for a reflection on "What We Have Learned: The Role of Public Policy in Promoting Macro and Micro Levels of Intervention in Response to the Challenges Confronting Latino Men."

With the current shifts in demographics despite the grinding repression now taking place, this ample series of studies provides essential information not only for the Latino Male and all who know, work and love and live with such, but for every other American, that together we may progress together as one family.

The claim is that powerful pedagogies, methodologies and theories can be constructed by taking a more detailed look at multimodal meaning-making in diverse contexts. By describing and analyzing multimodal practices and texts across a diverse range of contexts, the book highlights different constructs, issues and emerging questions dealing with the study of literacies and multimodality.

Way too pricey!

What a shame! This looks like a really fantastic book, and there are some great chapter authors that are very relevant to my research. I have read the one chapter available on Google Scholar, by Goodhand, Klem and Sørbø. (The Google preview quite stupidly excludes half of the contents pages, something Routledge might like to address).

But like all of the Routledge academic books on development and conflict related areas, the price excludes everyone from a developing country from buying it (it's a third of an average month's salary where I am now). The very people who are the focus of the research, who could most benefit from it, and who should have access to the information, are excluded. This is unethical and unconscionable. It's another form of academic discrimination and shows the short-sightedness of the academy and its publishers.
