In 1987 South Korea began a democratic transition after almost three decades of significant economic development under authoritarian rule. Increased civil unrest caused by dissatisfaction resulted in the regime agreeing to constitutional changes in the summer of 1987. By 1992 the first president without a military background was elected and during his tenure a further deepening of democracy took place. These reforms were instrumental in making it possible that in 1997 for the first time in South Korean history an opposition candidate was elected president. This book examines the initial transition and later attempts at consolidating democracy in South Korea, and argues that although significant progress had been made and a power alternation achieved by late 1997, South Korea could not, by the end of that decade (1987-97), be considered a consolidated democracy.

Until recently, there was only a slight body of work that could be classified as "Irish children’s literature" in comparison with Ireland’s contribution to adult literature in the twentieth century. The contributors to the volume examine a range of texts in relation to contemporary literary and cultural theory, and children’s literature internationally, raising provocative questions about the future of the topic. Irish Children’s Literature and Culture is essential reading for those interested in Irish literature, culture, sociology, childhood, and children’s literature.

Valerie Coghlan, Church of Ireland College of Education, Dublin, is a librarian and lecturer. She is a former co-editor of Bookbird: An International Journal of Children's Literature. She has published widely on Irish children's literature and co-edited several books on the topic. She is a former board member of the IRSCL, and a founder member of the Irish Society for the Study of Children's Literature, Children's Books Ireland, and IBBY Ireland.

Keith O’Sullivan lectures in English at the Church of Ireland College of Education, Dublin. He is a founder member of the Irish Society for the Study of Children’s Literature, a former member of the board of directors of Children’s Books Ireland, and past chair of the Children’s Books Ireland/Bisto Book of the Year Awards. He has published on the works of Philip Pullman and Emily Brontë.

The new standard text on deficit thinking.

Valencia has been writing for some time on the topic of "deficit thinking", which he generally defines as a framework which analyses the attributes of student failure as being endogenous in nature - the problem lies within the student. The book is structured and paced well: first presenting a brief overview and introduction, then individually analysing the six strands of deficit thinking, and finally reaching the "dismantling" stage of the book. Educators are clearly the target audience, but anyone with an interest in how discriminatory policies are propagated by our most popular discourses will find this book interesting.

This is an academic text, but an immensely readable one. Valencia is not necessarily witty in a way that usually makes these texts stand out, but he is certainly incisive and treats the subject matter with the seriousness it deserves.

Valencia's writing style allows for the book to be a comfortable length, which is usually one of the biggest struggles for writers who are so deeply entrenched in the field that they write about. Valencia goes after other academics with both barrels, but is careful to back all of his criticisms with appropriate sources - something that he accurately accuses the deficit thinkers of failing to do.

It is fair to say that this should be a standard text for teachers in preparation, as well as those already in service.

Confronting the Slaughter Table of History

"It has been estimated genocide has occurred on average every five years since the WWII Holocaust. One would never know this from attending school and college, or from the media. Yet, Professor Samuel Totten has made it his professional career to not only correct this blatant silence, but has actively pushed for establishing early warning systems to prevent genocides from erupting.

Dr. Totten is among the most prolific and prodigious genocide scholars in the world. Singling out one from among scores of his books published over the past several decades does not begin to capture or cover the breadth and depth of scholarly knowledge on the "slaughter bench of history" and emotionally moving oral interviews with genocide survivors from countries on every continent, that he has written and documented. Centuries is the 4th version, with the 3 earlier versions, beginning in 1997, differently titled Century of Genocide - i.e., 20th century. The 2012 version has new chapters that encompass 3 centuries - 19th to 21st, including up-to-the-moment genocide occurring in Darfur and in the Nuba mountains.

From the opening page of the Centuries of Genocide the reader is challenged with provocative questions most of us never consider, or do not care enough, let alone engage in ongoing reflection:

"Will the killing ever stop? Will the scourge of genocide ever be eradicated? Will humanity ever be wise enough to prevent the deaths of potential genocidal victims before they become yet another set of statistics in the welter of statistics?"

These were the opening words of the 1997 first edition. In the intervening years the government of Sudan and the Janjaweed (Arab militia) slaughtered 400,000 black Africans of Darfur.

For Totten, Parsons, and their colleagues, the lack of political will to prevent genocide, and the political casuistry of excuses, compromises and realpolitik speak, is really moral turpitude. It is incumbent upon citizens to inform themselves so that a persuasive, persistent pressure can push timid officials to cast off their addiction to realpolitik.

Totten continues publishing the facts and stories of humanity's evil inhumanity in the hopes that, "...individuals can become knowledgeable about these matters and then find a collective voice strong enough to convince leaders in society, along with the public at large, to prevent and/or stanch such crimes early on."

Book is an eye opener, by the accounts of those whom were there. Conditions and what was felt is explained in great detail. The authors did an outstanding job putting it all together.
