A new look at Italy in the World!

R. J. B. Bosworth. Italy and the Wider World 1860-1960. London and New York: Routledge, 1996, 252 pages.
Richard Bosworth describes himself in the preface to this volume as "the canguro of Italian historiography" (p. x). The image is appropriate not only because he is the most well-known Australian Italianist but also because of the wide range of territory he covers in the eight chapters of this peculiar study. This is not a standard history of Italian foreign policy or of some temporal, geographical, or substantial aspects of it. What Bosworth does here is to synthesise his earlier writing as well as anticipate the results of some of his current research and integrate them with what is essentially a critique of the existing literature on the subject (the volume has 52 pages of notes). The result is a masterful, critical overview of both Italian history of foreign relations and its historiography, a feat that only senior scholars can usually pull off. In the introduction Bosworth makes an interesting distinction between what he calls `legal' and `real' Italy. The first, "driven by a costly and perhaps irrational desire to mimic an imagined past, played the games of European Great Power politics and sought to seize territory in the mare nostrum and its hinterland. The `real' Italies, by contrast, through emigration laid the bases of the commercial and cultural empires of the future, in New York, and Buenos Aires, Kenya and Australia" (p. 3). This distinction is based on Bosworth's adherence to the Bielefeld school's precept that the study of "diplomacy and other forms of international policy should be placed in their social and economic context" (p. 7). In the book, however, Bosworth fails to adhere to this canon fully. He certainly pays attention to "the history of labour markets and financial practices, emigration and ideology, tourism and leisure, philosophy and sociology, and power in its fluctuating and manifold political, social and economic forms" (p. 7) but more than integrating these different historical fragments into a histoire totale, he deals with them in sequence. Thus, the interesting distinction between `real' and `legal' Italy is reflected more in the organization of this volume than in the treatment of the material. Bosworth, in any case, is conscious of this limitation since he admits that "this short book is scarcely the appropriate base from which to launch an historiographical revolution" (p. 13). Every revolution, however, begins with a first shot, and this is a well aimed one. The first five chapters are devoted to `legal' Italy. Bosworth tackles, in turn, Italian diplomacy within European power politics (chapters 1 and 2), the Italian military in war and peace (chapter 3), Italian commercial policies (chapter 4) and the rise and fall of the Italian empire (chapter 5). It is impossible to summarise the content of these five chapters in a book review since Bosworth touches upon basically every topic that has been the subject of debate among historians. All along, he interprets, rebuts, integrates and systematises. Overall, Bosworth claims that there was continuity in the diplomatic efforts of Liberal, Fascist and (First) Republic regimes. Lacking the necessary strength to challenge the status quo, they had to engage in tortuous and interminable diplomatic manoeuvres to attain marginal gains. In tackling the history of Italian commerce, Bosworth agrees with Rosario Romeo's affirmation (although he disagrees with him on almost everything else) "that a United Italy could only make sense if it succeeded economically" and pushes this view to its logical conclusion by stating that "such success remains the fundamental justification for the retention of an Italian nation state" (p. 78). Not surprisingly, after an initial "naïve reliance on the market" by the end of World War I "the state had become the basic motor of Italian industrial growth" (p. 85). Bosworth's overall evaluation of Italy's imperial ambitions and adventures is a trenchant one: "bathetic." It proved costly and did not resolve Italy's demographic problem, which was the rationalization usually given to justify efforts in this area. The last three chapters of the book deal with "real' Italy. Chapter 6 looks at emigration, while chapter 7 examines culture and ideology. The last chapter is devoted to a neglected area of Italian studies: tourism. Such a neglect seems surprising since "in the century from 1860 to 1960, Italy's biggest and most lucrative industry, the one certainly with the largest number of employees and perhaps with the most satisfied customers, was tourism" (p. 159). Bosworth examines primarily the origins, development and organisation of this industry and makes some occasional forays into its impact on the perception of Italy and Italian products abroad. In the past Bosworth has been occasionally criticized for what Christopher Seton-Watson has called the "excessively moralistic and condemnatory" tone of his writings on Italy (see his review of this same volume in Modern Italy, 1, 2, Autumn 1996: 110-112). I find Bosworth's tone to be occasionally sarcastic, but this appears to me as a strength rather than a weakness. It helps the reader keep things in perspective and makes the reading more interesting and often even enticing. The volume is to be particularly recommended to doctoral students grappling with the literature on Italian foreign relations and looking for a thesis topic. Almost every paragraph in this book, in fact, provides a point of departure for further research. The only major problem with this volume is its price: $ 90.95 Canadian seem excessive. Bosworth, however, can hardly be faulted for this.

A good start to a larger analysis

Lawler explores the meanings conveyed by images of surf culture and how they are are deployed in the service of capitalism. She gives a detailed history of the genealogy of surfing in California where the modern surfing subculture was born, imported as it was from Hawaii around the turn of the 20th century. But note that this is not a book about the history of surfing, although it is of course a big part of it. It's more a look at how the forces of capitalism are engaged and the tropes it unearths which can be seen as forces of subversion against capital's alienating tendencies in American society. These can all be identified through the way images of surfers and surfing have been used by the market to sell just about anything by appealing to the subconscious and conscious desires for freedom from the mind-numbing values of the work ethic which originated with the Calvinist Puritans who settled in Hawaii. Surfing as a subculture is seen as possibly the last remaining vestige of the counterculture spawned by the 50's beat generation which grew into the hippie culture of the 60's and 70's.

Lawler is correct in her arguments and the book lays a good foundation for further studies in surfing's enduring presence on the American landscape. If there are any flaws it is that the analysis is limited in connecting this presence to larger political forces and historical events that shaped it. This is probably as much a critique in how capitalism as a framework habitually fails to account for the reality of colonialism which is the necessary pre-condition that makes capitalist exploitation of a population possible. How does American imperialism in Hawaii and California inform the discussion? The author touches on imperialism for a minute in her analysis of the surfing scenes in the movie Apocalypse Now but stops short in connecting it to the history of settler colonialism. But it does leave the door open to this expanded discussion.

About the Author

Linda Gunsberg, Ph.D. is a psychoanalyst and forensic expert. She chairs the Family Law and Family Forensics Training Program at Washington Square Institute (NYC) and co-chairs the Psychoanalysis and Law Discussion Group of the American Psychoanalytic Association. Gunsberg is a Consulting Editor for Psychoanalytic Inquiry and has co-edited Fathers and Their Families and A Handbook of Divorce and Custody.

Sandra G. Hershberg, M.D. is a psychoanalyst and adult and child psychiatrist. She is the Director of Psychoanalytic Training, Founding Member and Training and Supervising Analyst at the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis in Washington, D.C. She is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis. Hershberg also serves as  Associate Editor of the International Journal of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology and is a Consulting Editor for Psychoanalytic Inquiry.

I have heard that Garber is a master in her field. That field is the plays of Shakespeare. I have heard that when she leaves that field to discuss other topics, like lit theory in general, well, your mileage can vary. I got this book for the title essay. A small guilty pleasure of mine is wondering who wrote those darn plays? Bacon? Oxford? That precocious high schooler, Shakespeare himself? Many look at how intelligent and well-informed the author must have been to produce the plays. Few actually point out the interesting errors, which may help determine the author's identity more accurately. That isn't discussed in the book, however. The title essay does go into that controversy, somewhat. Mostly Garber sorts through it by pointing out enthusiasts of that controversy have typically been Americans, crazy, or crazy Americans. She then conveniently slides over into what the book's essays are basically about, the uncanny present-soon-to-be-unpresent-while-present tropes rampant through Shakespeare's plays, but often embodied? In the form of ghosts. She unpacks Freud, which is tolerable; she unpacks Derrida, which is much less so; she unpacks Lacan, which I find absolutely cephalically destructive to my sanity. If you enjoy turgid & viscid lit crit, then portions of this book will undoubtedly enchant you. Some chapters aren't overly leavened with literary verbosity. The chapters dealing with Richard III and Julius Caesar are pretty good; their respective ghosts of deformity and treachery handled lucidly. Other chapters were more difficult to get through. The chapter devoted completely to Hamlet was a strange chore as I'm extremely fond of that play. The treatment of Freud's relation to the play through his personal life and the origin of the Oedipus complex prompted me to check my E mails regularly. Also, the play's theme of ghostly revenge intersticed between remembering and action, with frequent references to Nietzsche, seemed less than innovative to me. By the way, I do understand that interstice is not a verb, but the lit critters have inspired me. I wish I enjoyed this one more, but a sign(watch out for the signifier a la Lacan) that most of the time I was reading it I felt the sudden urge to check Facebook clearly indicates I did not.

Offering a new reading of Islamic ethical and political thought in the Būyid period (334-440/946-1048), this book focuses particularly on the philosopher Abū Hayyān al-Tawhīdī who lived in Baghdad and what is now western Iran.

Ethics in Islam provides the first major treatment of al-Tawhīdī's ethics, political thought, and social idealism, investigating the complex influences that shaped this thought and especially his concept of friendship, which is analysed in the unique context of Būyid society. Al-Tawhīdī revives the value of friendship in politics. He introduces it as the best way to reform social and political order and as a means to the good life, to restrain passion and self-interest, to bring about cooperation and promote reason, and for action in opposition to religious zeal. Instead of seeing him as alienated from society, supposedly rejecting traditional Muslim beliefs, this book places him in his historical and intellectual contexts, and shows that while he was original in many ways, his outlook was firmly rooted in the Islamic culture in which he was educated.

Contributing to modern discussions of Islam and political ethics, this book is of interest to scholars and researchers of political philosophy, comparative ethical thought and Islamic studies.

Part II presents a diverse set of case studies, from the earthquake in Haiti and the widespread violence in Mexico, to the ongoing exodus from Somalia, and environmental degradation in Alaska and the Carteret Islands, among others. Part III focuses on populations that may be at particular risk, including non-citizens, migrants at sea, those displaced to urban areas, and trapped populations. The concluding section maps the global governance of crisis migration and highlights gaps in current provisions for crisis-related movement across multiple levels.

This valuable book brings together previously diffuse research and policy issues under the analytical umbrella of "crisis migration." This book presents a critical appraisal of the main theories of distributive justice. It develops the view that all such theories, or at least all liberal theories, may be seen as expressions of laissez-faire with compensations for factors that they consider to be morally arbitrary.

More precisely, these theories are interpreted as specifying that the outcome of individuals acting independently, without the intervention of any central authority, is just, provided that those who fare ill for reasons that the theories deem to be arbitrary, for example, because they have fewer talents than others, receive compensation from those who fare well. The principal theories discussed are Rawls’s justice as fairness, Dworkin’s equality of resources, what may loosely be called Steiner-Vallentyne common ownership theories, and Nozick’s entitlements theory.

The book considers the extent, if any, to which the theories examined can accommodate both liberty and equality. It concludes that if any such accommodation is possible it will be found in common ownership theories.

About the Author
Rosemary Chapin is an award-winning teacher and researcher, possessing extensive program development experience in the social policy arena. After receiving her PhD, she worked as a Research/Policy Analyst for the Minnesota Department of Human Services, where she was involved in crafting numerous long-term care reform initiatives. In 1989, she joined the faculty at the University of Kansas, where she established and now directs the Office of Aging and Long Term Care (OALTC), which was created to improve social service practice and policy for older adults, particularly low-income elders.

so if the text is for use in a specific class it may be better to buy or rent the hard copy

The page numbers do not match the hard copy version, so if the text is for use in a specific class it may be better to buy or rent the hard copy. Also, the perspective the author writes from is very clear. While it is a book oriented towards social policy, the tools you need to critique and survey the many social policies out there so far have not been in this book. Instead, the perspective seems to be that all social policy is good social policy, which is certainly not the case.

It's a pretty good textbook

This book is pretty good - it has lots of visuals and breakdowns to help the reader to retain the information and to make it interesting. It also goes into just the right amount of detail about policy and practice, in my opinion. Sometimes the data is a little out of date, but not too much so to make relevant points and lessons.
