Important but flawed work

This is a critically important book that all aspiring and practicing principals/curriculum leaders should read. It reminds us that curriculum and instruction, by its very nature, always reflects particular (powerful) political agendas. Ylimaki argues convincingly that continuing to prepare future educational leaders without engaging them in a critical examination of the tremendous influence that these political forces have had (and continue to have) on American K-12 education will only result in maintaining the status quo of educational inequity, injustice, and mediocrity. This book is a refreshing break from this harmful trend. Kudos to Rose Ylimaki for her valuable and much needed contribution!

UNFORTUNATELY, this book has numerous and serious writing errors (far worse than mere typos) - errors that make it a VERY confusing read - especially the case studies, where the names of the communities, schools, and principals are used incorrectly in many places. IT APPEARS THE COPY EDITOR WAS ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL! I recommend waiting for the 2nd edition - hopefully they'll have corrected the mistakes by then.

Very thought-provoking book!

This book is critically important for curriculum work in a time of neoliberal pressures and standardization. Ylimaki makes a contribution to the literature by challenging leaders to think beyond instructional leadership. The case studies are very well written and helpful for students to understand the complexities of today's curriculum leadership.

Extremely useful and well written

Well researched - any self-respecting organist should have this book in their library! And I do hope for a second, enlarged edition. For instance, Eastern Europe is NOT covered in this book, resulting with some very important and popular composers such as Eben being omitted. Editor C. Anderson acknowledges this in his preface. Let's hope that the publisher understands this too!

This is a very well written and researched, brief history and survey of organ literature in the 20th century. It does an excellent job discussing composers and works from little know areas such as the Netherlands or Eastern Europe. Some composers are glossed over. But if you are simply looking for a brief overview of organ literature in the 20th century and are not excessively worried about completeness, I would highly recommend this book.
