Emanuele Saccarelli graduated from the University of Minnesota with a doctorate in Political Science and is an Assistant Professor in the Political Science Department at San Diego State University. His publications include Empire, Rifondazione Comunista, and the Politics of Spontaneity and Alone in the World: The Existential Socrates in the Apology and Crito.

A valuable contribution to Marxist thought

Gramsci and Trotsky in the shadow of Stalinism, by Emanuele Saccarelli, uncovers a peculiar truth in considering the intellectual legacy of Marxist thinkers Leon Trotsky and Antonio Gramsci. Despite the fact that Trotsky and Gramsci hail from the same intellectual tradition, the former has been all-but-ignored in academic circles, while the latter has enjoyed a certain post-mortal celebrity. This fact is all the more perplexing as Trotsky's lifelong political struggle and writings epitomized Marxist politics far better than those of Gramsci.
Saccarelli argues that so-called Academic, or Western, Marxists make Gramsci palatable for their delicate taste buds by sterilizing his writings of any trace of revolutionary content, a process that is only possible because the effects of Gramsci's physical removal from the revolutionary struggle manifested themselves (adversely) in his much-lauded Prison Notebooks. No such sterilization is possible with Trotsky, who remained a dedicated, impassioned revolutionary up to the day of his murder at the hands of a Stalinist agent. Gramsci is accepted into the cannon of political thought for all the wrong reasons, whereas Trotsky is left out precisely because of his unwavering Marxist principles.
The difference in the way these two Marxists have been handled says loads about the misconceptions of Marxism that exist within academia and left radicalism. Following the degeneration of the Soviet Union under the Stalinist bureaucracy, and the subsequent purging of political Marxism from Western civilization, certain academics have adopted 'Marxism' as an analytical framework for conducting supposedly neutral political science research. Marxism, however, is not neutral (nor is mainstream political science, for that matter). Trotsky and Gramsci were at their best when demonstrating the Marxist dialectic of theory and practice by deriving from their social analysis strategy and tactics for concrete, contemporary political struggles in which they themselves played consequential roles. For Marxism to finally step out of the shadow of Stalinism, it must reclaim its revolutionary heritage, which can only mean a reexamination of the political legacy of Trotsky and Trotskyism.
Professor Saccarelli's book is a unique specimen in modern academia: an intellectually serious work with stylistic flair. While most political science writing is cumbersome and esoteric, Saccarelli manages to illicit some laughs while probing his subject matter. The book is meticulously researched, and displays a deep understanding of its complex subjects. This is both an entertaining and informative read, which I highly recommend for anyone trying to seriously understand Marxist political thought.
