Daniel Bertauxis Director of Research in Sociology at Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique. For several years after 1991 he organized the collection of case histories of families in Russia in order to document what ordinary Russians had experienced during seventy years of 'State Socialism'.Paul Thompsonis Research Professor in Sociology at the University of Essex, and a Research Fellow at the Institute of Community Studies, London. He is Founder-Editor ofOral Historyand Founder of the National Life Story Collection at the British Library.Anna Rotkirchis a sociologist at the University of Helsinki. She has specialized in comparative research on families and sexuality, autobiographical research and Russian studies.

Seeing only what you want to see

This book is a biased exploration to find people in ex-Soviet Union that actually enjoyed the poverty and long term employment of living in a communist state. There is no doubt that there are many that knew nothing else but the authors did no comparison of wealth or health or progression towards superior living. The writers actually believe that communism was a superior way of live and even repeatedly call it utopia.
This would be a decent read if it wasn't so biased. Every culture has two sides to it but this is so grossly irresponsible, the book doesn't deserve your time. If you are the type that wants others to make decisions for you and you must "know" the right people to move up, instead of hard work, education and determination, this book is for you. If you have dreams, forget them. If you have personal desires, throw them away. They are suppressed towards a common goal that only a few know. That is communism.
