About the Author
Bradley Lewis is Associate Professor at New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study with affiliated appointments in the Department of Psychiatry, the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis, and the Division of Medical Humanities. He has dual training in humanities and psychiatry, and he writes and teaches at the interface of medicine, humanities, cultural studies, and disability studies. Lewis is the author of Moving Beyond Prozac, DSM, and the New Psychiatry: The Birth of Postpsychiatry and Narrative Psychiatry: How Stories Shape Clinical Practice.

Excellent overview of depression and its history

This is a wonderfully informative book that defines depression from many different angles. Lewis first approaches it through clinical "disease-based" models, but then moves on to other conceptions of the phenomenon, including social and historical. Each time, he takes care to point out the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches. As such, the book presents an extremely broad perspective, ranging from the view that depression as a brain disease (or imbalance) that should be treated with pharmaceuticals, to the argument that depression is mental damage best treated through behavioral therapies (including yoga and meditation and art therapy), to more positive views of depression as a "dangerous gift" that's useful for inspiring creativity, to the more Foucaultian argument that depression is an arbitrary bundling of emotional conditions. Lewis also traces the historical roots of our present-day understandings of depression, and speculates as to what we may never know regarding it. Overall, the focus is on embodying and contextualizing what we know about depression. Lewis's wide-ranging scholarship, and admirably persistent objectivity, makes this an extremely refreshing and helpful book on the subject.
