"The book is worth reading and it constitutes a useful source of information for graduate students who are searching for various data and bibliographical information about laptop programs in schools. It is also likely to prove useful to policy makers and school district technology coordinators who can benefit from the various laptop computer experiences at schools described in the book." -- E-Learning (2008), Volume 5, Number 4
"The Digital Pencil describes the emergence and use of one-to-one computing programs within education. Cocktail-sausage literature review
By Phillip A. Towndrow
In response to the penetration of information and communication technologies into educational contexts, The Digital Pencil mostly overviews the arguments for one-to-one computing in schools, sets out the conditions for laptop use, describes how students use laptops in their work, and summarizes some ways in which one-to-one programmes have been/can be evaluated and studied. Overall, the presentation is simple and predictable but the critique of current practice is lightweight due to the authors' bite-sized chaining together of other people's evidence and ideas. Yes, this book is a coherent "cocktail-sausage," couched academically, however, there's little that's new or informative here as far as educational policy-making and implementation are concerned.
The nub of the one-to-one laptop issue in classrooms (irrespective of level, subject or school, it seems) is stated by the authors in the last pages of the book as follows: "... we are not in a position to say with confidence that one-to-one computer enhanced learning environments will increase or decrease student achievement (p. 203)." So what can be done? The authors go on to caution that "... school systems and individual schools ought to be careful in setting expectations as they plan strategically in terms of the adaptation of one-to-one technologies that are unquestionably reshaping students' out-of-school lives." That's sound counsel but how can this planning be done and why? The authors do not say.
