With regard to the third goal, the analysis incorporates more than 500 regions across Europe, North and South America, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and the so-called BRIC economies of Brazil, Russia, India, and China.

The importance of the concept of competitiveness has increased rapidly in recent years, with the issues surrounding it becoming, at the same time, more empirically refined and theoretically complex. The focus on regions reflects the growing consensus that they are the primary spatial units that compete to attract investment, and it is at the regional level that knowledge is circulated and transferred, resulting in agglomerations, or clusters, of industrial and service sector enterprises. This growing acknowledgement of the region’s role as a key spatial unit of organisation has led to attention turning to competitiveness at a more regional level.

The book explores the results of the World Competitiveness Index of Regions (WCIR), covering the rankings and results of the 2014 edition. The WCIR provides a tool for analysing the development of a range of regional economies across the globe. It enables an illustration of the changing patterns of regional competitiveness on the international stage to be generated. In fundamental terms, the WCIR aims to produce an integrated and overall benchmark of the knowledge capacity, capability, and sustainability of each region, and the extent to which this knowledge is translated into economic value and transferred into the wealth of the citizens of each region.

About the Author

John D. Wright is a former reporter for Time magazine and has written extensively for other magazines, including People, Money, and Reader's Digest. He holds a PhD. in Communications from the University of Texas, and has taught at Emory & Henry College in Virginia, the University of South Alabama, and Colorado State University. He's been a contributor to more than 150 reference books, including The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, and the Oxford Guide to British and American Culture.

In both national and international law the imminence requirement, if strictly applied, renders any defensive measure taken in anticipation of a would-be attack illegal. Recently, however, attempts have been made to relax the temporal requirement of the self-defence doctrine (imminence) with a view to allowing individuals or States to employ deadly force to arrest an anticipated threat when they ‘believe’ that using ‘pre-emptive’ lethal force would be the only way to thwart an expected harm. In domestic criminal law, it has been argued that it is necessary to relax the rule of imminence in domestic violence cases where women employ lethal force against their abusive partners when there is no imminent threat to justify defensive force. At the international level, while there has long been controversy as to the justifiability of pre-emptive force in non-confrontational settings, following the September 11 attacks, the Bush Administration’s ‘war on terror’ policy radically shifted the focus from the notion of anticipation to that of prevention, making it clear that, if necessary, it would invoke unilateral force against emerging threats before they are fully formed.

The book surveys the roots, role, rationale, and objectives of self-defence and questions whether the requirement of imminence should be removed from the traditional contours of the self-defence doctrine in national and international law.

In contemporary forms of psychoanalysis, particularly intersubjective systems theory, the turn towards contextualism has permitted the development of new ways of thinking and practicing that have dispensed with the notion of isolated individuality. For many who embrace this "post-subjectivist" way of thinking and practicing, the recognition that all human experience is fundamentally immersed in the world makes the question of individuality seem confusing, even anachronistic. Roger Frie, Ph.D., Psy.D., R. Psych, is Associate Professor of Education at Simon Fraser University, Affiliate Associate Professor of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, and Supervisor and faculty member at the William Alanson White Institute, New York. He is an editorial board member of Psychoanalytic Psychology and has published five books: Subjectivity and Intersubjectivity in Modern Philosophy and Psychoanalysis (Rowman and Littlefield, 1997); Understanding Experience: Psychotherapy and Postmodernism (Routledge, 2003); Psychotherapy as a Human Science (Duquesne University Press, 2006, with Daniel Burston); Psychological Agency: Theory, Practice and Culture (The MIT Press, 2008); and Beyond Postmodernism: New Perspectives in Clinical Theory and Practice (Routledge, 2009, with Donna Orange).

William J. Coburn, Ph.D., Psy.D., is a Training and Supervising Analyst and faculty member at the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis, Los Angeles.
